Open invitation to my IRC server

I have spun up an IRC server, for fun. If you want to try it out, visit my web interface for a temporary glance, or download an IRC client of your choice (e.g., hexchat). You can connect to quajzen.page port 6697 (TLS). Email me for concerns logging on (or find me on discord).

If you are unfamiliar with IRC, it's Discord from the 90's, but a protocol (chat room structure) and not a centrally managed app. That means when you log into my server, its entirely run by me and not a company. All server maintenance, server moderation is up to me! That means if the server ends up busy, you may have to wait on me or my appointed moderators to respond. Like a Discord server, I suppose. On the other hand, I do solemnly swear not to scrape your data.

IRC has a remarkably similar structure to discord (huh! funny...). In each server, there are individual text channels (but no voice channels). It's less feature-ful than discord (though the web client handles it, link previews are by default not a thing, e.g.). A couple of general gotcha's:

  • Channels have "operators" - moderators. You have a lot of independence when running a channel - there are certain things I, as a server operator, would not be able to interfere in.
  • Channels can be created by anyone - and creating a channel makes you an oper of that channel.
  • There are some built in commands of the server for changing your display name, joining channels, etc. all the things you would do with a settings interface.
    • /join #general (joins the channel #general)
    • /nick oldname newname (changes your nickname appropriately)
    • /leave #general (as it says).
    • /list (list channels)
  • IRC is a generally slower platform - pro or con. Leave the window open in the background and respond when you notice.

Why use IRC?

  • You're a tech hipster, mainframe geezer, or just curious.
  • You're tired of Discord ads, data harvesting, etc. and want a home-grown community to chill with friends in.
  • It will probably end up being a different crowd of users, which can be a pro or con.
  • I'm hoping to host a variety of channels for a variety of interests. Media, TTRPG (of course), maybe software? I dunno, make whatever you want.

 A Final Note....

This is incredibly new to me. let me know how I'm doing (email me, or just send a message on IRC or Discord). I also have a bot - quasiwizard that can do basic "emotes."
